The name comes from the fact that there’s a microchip or circuit located in the plastic head of the key that is used to activate the ignition system of the car in which they’re installed. When turned in the ignition lock, these devices will immediately receive a signal from the car’s computer and then respond with its own signal. If the computer receives no response, or if it’s the wrong response, it will refuse to start the vehicle.

Transponder keys are a great security feature to have on a car. No longer is the would-be car thief able to hot wire the ignition wires or force the ignition cylinder to start the car and drive away. Cars protected in this way will just refuse to go.
